5 Tips Before You Buy a Bitcoin Miner in Australia
1. Sort your setup before the miner arrives
Get power and airflow right first. Bigger rigs like an Antminer pull serious current, so have a licensed electrician check your circuit. Don't run them off a powerboard. Aussie summers are brutal, so plan how you'll get heat out of the room and keep humidity down, whether that's a garage, a shed or a vented corner.
2. Buy from someone you can hold accountable
Skip random sellers on Telegram or WeChat. Stick with established suppliers, and check the warranty and where repairs happen. Sending a dead unit back overseas is slow and costly. Before you compare prices, work out the landed cost in AUD, including GST and shipping. See Where to Buy.
3. Compare efficiency, not just hashrate
Look at two numbers. J/TH (joules per terahash) shows how much power each terahash costs you, and lower is better. $/TH shows what you're paying upfront for each terahash. At around 35c/kWh, efficiency matters more here than in most countries.
4. Look after it
Don't plug it in and forget it. Keep an eye on temps and hashrate, blow the dust out regularly, and keep the firmware up to date. A clean miner runs cooler and wastes less power.
5. Protect what you mine
Don't mine straight to an exchange or a hot wallet. Set up a hardware wallet ([TODO: hardware wallet e.g. Tangem referral link]) and send your payouts there. Some pools offer split payouts, so part can go to cold storage and part to cover your power bill.
